Introduction (RealAudio file)

Index of Slides

John McNeal is on the faculty at Stanford University Medical School, where he confines his practice and research in the Department of Urology entirely to the study of the prostate gland. He began research on the prostate in 1961 while in residency, using autopsy specimens. During a period of 22 years in a general hospital setting, he expanded his series to well over 500 cases and published on malignancy, premalignancy, BPH and normal morphology. When radical prostatectomy specimens became available around 1982, he continued his research at Stanford under Dr. Thomas Stamey, accumulating a series of 1,500 serially blocked surgical specimens. His studies have focussed on quantitative analysis of multiple morphologic variables and use of this data to reconstruct the natural history of prostate cancer and determine patient survival risk factors.
