Review of Pathology of the Placenta CD-ROM by Stephen Romansky, M.D.
This CD-ROM is a superb presentation of the major pathologic lesions of the human
placenta, including a description of how to examine the placenta. There are more
than 400 gross and microscopic pictures, text slides to explain the salient
features, and clear audio description of what the viewer is to observe. The text
also discusses why it is important to make various special studies. A list of
references and an index of the photographs are included. The materials are
organized in the usual manner of placental examination and encompass virtually
all of the important aspects of pathologic change in the placenta. The images are
superb, crisp, and demonstrative of the lesions depicted.
The CD-ROM disk is extremely easy ot use. Running on both Macintosh and IBM-PC
processors, in Window 3.11 or Windows 95/98, it es extremely fast and easily
manipulated. Instructions for installation and use are easily followed and can be
executed by the most novice of computer users. Users can employ to "auto-play"
mechanism or advance the slides one by one, return to a previous slide, search
for specific items, or advance to the next topic, in short, the application
provides all the good things possible with modern technology.
Information provided on this disk is up-to-date, accurate, and complete. While
this is not a comprehensive text with all the nuances possible in print, it
provides a superb overview of placental pathology. For the pathologist or
perinatologist wishing to become acquainted with what the placenta can contribute
to perinatal care, this CD-ROM is the fastest and best way to proceed. It will be
an excellent tool for resident teaching. It is so good that I wish I had been
able to produce this myself. I congratulate the author and technical staff who
put this together.
