Journal of Cutaneous Pathology

Review of Dermatopathology by Philip LeBoit, M.D. and Jeff Harvell, M.D.

Dermatopathology by Philip LeBoit, M.D. and Jeff D. Harvell, M.D. is the latest edition of "The Pathology Masters Series", a line of CD-ROM's produced by Universal Multimedia. The target audience for the series is pathologists in training as well as practicing pathologists who desire a brief refresher course in any of ten selected topics in pathology. This latest disc provides an overview of dermatopatholgy with roughly three hours of audio lecture and over three hundred fifty color slides, the majority of which are clinical and microscopic images.

The subject matter is broadly divided into inflammatory skin diseases and tumors of the skin. The inflammatory disorders are further subdivided into histologic patterns such as psoriasiform dermatitis, vasculitis, and vesicobullous diseases. The tumors are subdivided according to cell type of origin. Each of these smaller categories is then presented as a ten to twenty minute lecture. These lectures are concise and instructive, and all diseases are well depicted in clear clinical and histologic photos. In this manner the disc meets its objective of introducing the field of dermatopathology.

The CD is also well formatted. The content is easy to access by simply "pointing and clicking" with the mouse, and the photos are easily copied to the user's desktop for use in creating presentations.

However, the disc does not have any self-assessment tools that would reinforce the learning of the material presented. This would be a welcome addition to future installments in this series.
